Death Ape Disco: Supervolcano

10/06/13  ||  Smalley

While Lord K (or “Phil”, as I lovingly(?) like to call him sometimes) has had his own metal projects of varying quality for some time, and GlobalD already has forumers here due to their own bands’ forums being hosted on the site, I still can’t recall a staffer recording with a band after he joined the staff, and then having that record reviewed by another staffer. It might’ve happened before, I don’t remember at any rate, but at least The Duff’s project, Death Ape Disco, is my first time reviewing an album that’s so close to home, so to speak. And, while its “grunge/doom/rock/prog, Clutch/Soundgarden/Down” style (as described by the man himself) isn’t typically my cup of tea when it comes to metal, it’s still pretty enjoyable.

To be honest, I’m not sure just how grungy, prog-y, or Clutch/Soundgarden/Down-y I’d say this really is (I heard like, about, zero prog in this), but I’d still say it has a nice, hard rockin’, metal ‘n roll style with a good consistent energy, sludgy guitar production, lots of good, synchronized back-up vocals, and a gritty, soulful lead singer. It even reminded me of some of Entombed’s death ‘n roll works at times, even, which should definitely get your attention if you’re a typical GD’er. “Supervolcano” is catchy, no-nonsense, hard rockin’ metal for the most part, and it definitely works well for that.

8/10: So go support your fellow GD’er, people!
